What's it like to be a Radiologist?
As a Radiologist you will diagnose and carry out treatments using ultrasound, x-rays, CT scans, MRIs and other imaging technology. There are three types of Radiologists – Diagnostic Radiologists, who use medical imaging techniques to diagnose a disease or condition; Interventional Radiologists, who perform image-guided procedures inside a person's body, such as inserting stents to open up arteries; and Therapeutic Radiologists (also known as Radiation Oncologists) who use radiation to treat diseases such as cancer.
Tasks and duties
- Assessing which medical imaging technique is the best one to use to diagnose a patient's condition.
- If more than one technique is required, assessing the best order in which to perform different medical imaging examinations.
- Interpreting medical images in order to make a diagnosis.
- Reporting the results of tests to the doctor who referred you.
- Using x-ray, MRI or ultrasound images during medical procedures.
- Undertaking radiation therapy.

How to become a Radiologist
Radiology is a specialist area of medicine and it takes several years to achieve employment in this area. To become a Radiologist, you must first complete a Bachelor of Medicine degree at university. Alternatively, you can study a degree in any discipline followed by a postgraduate degree in medicine.
- Complete a Bachelor of Medicine degree at an accredited university in Australia. These are typically six-year courses, open to anyone who is 17 and over and has completed Year 12 with appropriate prerequisite subjects, including one or more of the following: Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics.
- Become a registered Medical Practitioner, and undertake a minimum of two years' post-degree medical experience in a public hospital.
- Apply to the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) to undertake further training and ultimately receive fellowship. This is a five-year training program, commencing with general radiology with more system focused rotations in the fourth and fifth years.
